Health & Safety Policy Statement
South Wales Roofing & Carpentry (“the Company”) recognises its responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. We are committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, sub-contractors, clients, and the general public.
1. General Policy Intent
Our objective is to prevent accidents and cases of work-related ill health. We aim to:
-
Identify and manage health and safety risks arising from our work activities.
-
Provide and maintain safe plant and equipment.
-
Ensure the safe handling and use of substances.
-
Provide clear information, instruction, and training for all workers.
-
Implement a “Proper Way” approach where safety is never compromised for speed.
2. Working at Height (Roofing)
As roofing is our primary service, we adhere to the Work at Height Regulations 2005.
-
Edge Protection: Scaffolding or appropriate edge protection will be installed on all major roofing projects.
-
Safety Equipment: All team members on a roof must wear a hard hat, high-visibility clothing, and slip-resistant safety footwear at all times.
-
Weather Conditions: Work will be suspended during high winds, heavy rain, or icy conditions that pose a slip or fall risk.
3. Carpentry & Tool Safety
-
Machinery: All power tools, including circular saws and chisels, are checked for safety before use and are PAT tested where required.
-
PPE: Eye protection (goggles) and ear defenders must be worn when using cutting equipment.
-
Dust Control: We use dust extraction systems or high-grade masks (FFP3) when cutting timber to prevent the inhalation of wood dust.
4. Site Safety & Public Protection
-
Exclusion Zones: We establish clear exclusion zones beneath work areas to protect the public from falling debris.
-
Waste Management: All waste is cleared at the end of each day to prevent trip hazards.
-
Listed Buildings: When working on heritage sites, we take additional care to secure ageing structures before work commences.
5. Wildlife & Ecological Safety
In line with our Wildlife & Ecology Policy, we ensure that:
-
Surveys for bats and nesting birds are conducted before disturbing roof spaces.
-
Safe working distances are maintained from identified habitats.
-
Non-toxic materials are used where possible to protect local biodiversity.
6. Emergency Procedures
-
A fully stocked First Aid kit is present on every job site.
-
All team members are briefed on the location of the nearest hospital and emergency contact procedures.
-
Fire extinguishers are provided on-site when “hot work” (e.g., torch-on felt) is being performed.
